HIP HOP SUBGENRES (and examples)
Classic / Golden Era Hip Hop – Boom bap, lyrical, sample-based 70/80/90s/early 2000s.
2000s Hip Hop – Club bangers, crunk, and East/Southern hits from the early 2000s.
Trap / Modern Hip Hop – 808s, hi-hats, auto-tuned vocals, darker and minimal.
Soulful / Conscious Hip Hop – Lyrically driven with jazzy/soulful beats.
UK Rap / Grime / Afroswing – Fast-paced British flows with grime, Afro or Caribbean influence.
Dancehall x Hip Hop Fusion – Riddim-heavy blends of Caribbean sounds and rap.
R&B SUBGENRES
Old School R&B – Smooth, soulful vocals from the 70s–90s. 'Slow Jams' allowed
2000s R&B – Hit-heavy, hook-laden, often featuring rap collabs.
Neo-Soul – Jazzy, organic, and deeply expressive vocals.
Alt / Contemporary R&B – Modern, moody, sometimes electronic or trap-influenced
